Condom Couture
Fall 2011, AIDS Awareness Fashion Show
Society is teeming with taboos. “Condom Couture” crash lands on the major one: sex. You never see condoms out of the wrapper in polite society. So the idea of unloosing 500 condoms at once and sewing them onto a garment to create a delicate and chaste appearance – a virtual bouquet of dainty rosettes – was very ironic indeed. I wanted people to walk up to the garment, admire it, touch it, and covet it for its beauty, delicacy and purity. The purpose of making this garment was to explore the concept of illusion, with the goal of getting people to perhaps expand the size of their comfort zones through art.
